The old cast iron buildings died out. I'm not really sure whether the new skyscrapers killed them, or the new esthetics.
I think the civilization have to move forward, to make changes into they lifestyles and that makes the technology runs in very fast. So, I believe cast iron buildings die out as consequence of that quickly and continue change.
